About Joyce Gebauer
I am a native of B.C.born in Nelson and raised in Vancouver. I now call Maple Ridge home. I attended the Vancouver School of Art, as well as the Art Center in Los Angeles, and my interest then was mainly in commercial art.
While still in Los Angeles an opportunity arose for me to travel to Europe.
As a result, I stayed on and became involved in window design.
To fast forward, years later, and back at home in Canada I continued with my art work off and on. In 1996 I was commissioned to create a series of children's jigsaw puzzles with whimsical themes of biblical stories . As a result they have have been sold in Canada and the United States. I believe that it was at this point in time, that I began to love the "whimsical" style of painting, and led me to naive art, which I felt, gave me the license to step out of tradition, and into pure freedom and enjoyment. So thus, my "Simply Naive Art" was born.
The soon to be extinct grain elevators, and the prairies on which they stand, are a favorite subject, as well as whimsical scenes of the past and present. No matter what the subject is, one can expect to see bright, dramatic color variations that shy away from the traditional muted tones and have become inspirational to me.
